Werkraum Bregenzerwald

Contemporary handicrafts from the Bregenz Forest in combination with the new architecture has aroused worldwide attention. In 1999, the innovative craftspeople created an official platform in the Werkraum Bregenzerwald and in 2013 opened their own Werkraum building. On one hand, the multiple award-winning building by architect Peter Zumthor serves as a meeting place and on the other as a mega showcase– a shop window for handicraft culture in the Bregenz Forest region. Exhibitions, lectures, and workshops are just as much a part of the program as development work, fostering the new generation, and competitions (for instance Handwerk+Form). The Werkraum School has existed since 2016 as a new educational model. The pioneering spirit has been acknowledged by the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for Intangible Cultural Heritage.
