Studio Johanna Seelemann

Johanna Seelemann was born in Leipzig in 1990. She studied contextual design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven (master’s) and product design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavík (bachelor’s). Before establishing her own studio in 2020, she supported the designers of the Italian office Formafantasma in their “Ore Streams” and “Cambio” projects. The activities of Studio Johanna Seelemann range from conceptual design and product development via exhibitions and videos to interdisciplinary collaborations. Seelemann’s works explore the process and the aesthetics of everyday products, the journeys taken by goods along their supply chains, and the development of sustainable design methods. Her investigations lead to designs that are developed using the tools of substitution, adaptation, and resilience. By creating optimistic and alternative scenarios for the future, she sheds light on the hidden contexts of these everyday objects, which we far too readily take for granted.
