OPEN CALL
FOCUS: TRASH

"Trash is omnipresent: whether as a Y2K revival, a luxury bag in the form of

chip bag or islands of garbage in the ocean. We think it's time to take this ambivalent aesthetic phenomenon seriously." - Anton Rahlwes & Nina Sieverding (The Thing Magazine), guest curators

In 2024, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK invited curators Anton Rahlwes & Nina Sieverding (The Thing Magazine) to create the FOKUS format. The theme they chose for the group exhibition: Trash.

For the third edition of FOKUS, we are going to the bottom of the (aesthetic) garbage can together and asking: What makes trash trash? For us, "trash" describes a spectrum that operates between abstract stylistic form and concrete materiality.

This year's edition of FOKUS is looking for collectibles that explore the aesthetic concept of trash, deal with topics such as the circular economy/recycling through their materiality or design or experiment with biodegradable materials. What treasures and opportunities lie in our waste - or what we call garbage?

APPLY UNTIL 21.4.2024 AND WIN THE FIRST BANK SOCIAL DESIGN PRICE 2024

STADTARBEIT has been an essential part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK for ten years.

With the support of the Erste Bank sponsorship program - Vermehrt Schönes! - and in exchange with Caritas Vienna, the format enables social design projects.

The format supports projects that deal with social issues of social coexistence. This can be the analysis of urban and social spaces, the improvement of the coexistence of different social groups or the living conditions of minorities in the city. The projects take place in public spaces and also in cooperation with social institutions and should be accessible and comprehensible to the public.

A jury will select three projects from the submissions, which will be given a budget and included in the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK program. Learn more.
