Call for Ideas: Where is our coffee kept?

Together with J. Hornig, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is for the first time introducing a call for ideas on coffee storage. As part of an open design contest, we are looking for innovative solutions, on how the coffee bean, in form of ground coffee or as a whole, can be stored or stashed at home, or on how the users can be reminded to protect their coffee beans, how to replenish or also easily mark them.

WHERE IS OUR COFFEE KEPT?

„Ask not what your coffee can do for you, ask what you can do for your coffee.“

The good old coffee can, which back in the days has also often been used as a money hiding place, is currently experiencing a revival. Meanwhile, however, the content itself is often an investment that should be dealt with accordingly.

So what options are available to store coffee today? Does it have to be a can? We are looking for innovations in form of new materials and new formal solutions! But it's not just about storage, it's about helping to control the water level with or without the help of IoT technology:

How much coffee do I have left at home? How do I remind roommates how to store it properly? Does it need an image campaign for the bean or a subscription system to never have dry beans again? Whether two-dimensional instructions or three-dimensional storage novelty - We are looking for an innovative idea for the storage of coffee and everything connected with it.

Selection and awards

A jury consisting of experts, as well as representatives of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and J. Hornig, will select the best projects. The call will run from the 24th of June until the 25th of August 2019. The selection of the best projects will take place immediately after the deadline. The winner of the competition will receive a prize money of EUR 2,000 (excluding VAT).

The final presentation of the best projects will take place during the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2019 from the 27th of September until the 6th of October 2019 at the Festivalzentrale. The Festivalzentrale 2019 is located in the Althan Quartier, above the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof in the 9th district in Vienna.
