Rado
20.–28.9.2024
Rado gets things moving again! The Swiss watch brand is presenting a special highlight in the Festival Headquarters and at the Rado Boutique at Kärntner Straße 18: the “Rado True Square Thinline × VIENNA DESIGN WEEK.” This ultra-flat, square watch made from ivory-black high-tech ceramic was specially designed for the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and features a modern design with contrasting hands and a Rado logo in this year’s festival color, yellow. And the close links between Rado and the world of design are underlined once again in this year’s festival by the second edition of the RADO MOVING MATERIALS competition. Between March and August, six designers from the field of motion design were given the opportunity to convince visitors with installations specially produced for the video wall in the Rado Boutique in Vienna. All six episodes are being shown again in the Festival Headquarters and the winner of this year’s RADO MOVING MATERIALS Prize will be announced on 25.9. in the Rado Boutique. The designer of the best animation receives a cash prize and one of the limited edition of twenty “Rado True Square Thinline × VIENNA DESIGN WEEK” watches.
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 1: SOLIS SCORE
Klimentina Li
“‘Solis Score’ is a 3D animation that portrays light and shadow as equal protagonists in a visual exploration of the passage of time. It incorporates scanned analog photographs captured by the author in a timeframe of over ten years. Within the animation, the 3D element functions as a reflector, capturing and interpreting the brightness levels of each moment and translating them into a cryptic language. The animation invites viewers to question the abstract nature of time itself.”
Sound: “Talk to Me” by Subletvis
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 2: IT’S ABOUT TIME
Francesco Ciccolella
“Time is universal yet surprisingly subjective. While it flies by in moments of pleasure, in moments of fear it gives us the impression that it is standing still. As we grow older, it seems to speed up and emotionally charged experiences can feel longer when we recall them. How can we understand time, if emotions, age, or memories have the power to distort our temporal awareness? ‘It’s About Time’ is a frame-by-frame animation that addresses the visual perception of the passing of time. A series of short scenes explore phenomena such as ebb and flow, the changing seasons, or the growth of a particularly long beard. At the heart of the busy Festival Headquarters, the work invites viewers to pause and think about the subjective nature of our perception of time.”
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 3: A TALE OF STONES
Sebastian Freudenschuss / c. hausch
“Can space be incorporated into an object over time in such a way that it can be retrieved? A form of mass storage for memories? Do stones form this bridge between space and time? Stones are objects that are found everywhere, collections of minerals. And due to corrosion they are theoretically constantly changing. Removed from their natural context, detached from the flow of time, they become snapshots in the form of an object: Te saxa loquuntur! The stones speak of you! The video work ‘A TALE OF STONES’ combines stylized, three-dimensional reproductions of stones with illustrations of the locations in which they were found. Memories of a walk across a volcano and along the seashore and of a marble quarry on a pleasant Sunday in April are embodied by illustrations and animations. In this way, boxes full of stones, fragments of time, enable such memories to come alive again.”
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 4: PRESERVED
Anna Schlamp
“‘Preserved’ is an experimental short film that uses 3D scan technology to investigate the relationship between the forest and time. The video visualizes the transformation and stability of the forest over time as a means of illustrating the energy and the transient processes of nature. It invites the viewers to experience the depth and complexity of the forest from a new, digital perspective and to reflect upon the impact of time on nature.”
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 5: TIME WILL TAIL
Zahra Shahabi
“‘Time Will Tail’ is a vibrant examination of the intricacies of our relationship with time and with our four-legged companions. The work invites viewers to experience the rapport between the physical and the temporal in the form of rhythmic processes and textural vignettes. As we experience our world in a manner determined by simultaneity and productivity, the instinctive embodiment of the present by an animal that lives at our side offers a reality that counters the qualitative presence of our familiar quantification of fleeting moments. ‘Time Will Tail’ seeks to dissolve rigid temporal constructs and prioritize the present moment over any past or future lingering.”
RADO MOVING MATERIALS – EPISODE 6: GROW
Marie Dokter
“The work ‘Grow’ addresses qualities that make time visible: growth and flow. It employs procedural techniques to investigate various methods for abstractly visualizing time.”
