Urban Food & Design
Festival café
BIOFABRIQUE CANTEEN

20.–29.9.2024
How do we produce new reusable materials from waste? How can we reinvent hospitality, gastronomy, and food consumption to increase urban recycling levels? The VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and the Vienna Business Agency jointly commissioned the collective studio dreiSt. to design the festival café in this year’s Festival Headquarters. The resulting modular concept from Martin Kohlbauer, Luisa Zwetkow, and Sophie Coqui lends a new identity to alleged urban waste while also creating a built context for the culinary application of these ideas by Simone and Adi Raihmann’s Karma Food.
Materials such as a brick made from mineral waste from Vienna’s surroundings are the results of the experimental phase of BIOFABRIQUE VIENNA, which is based on the bioregional design approach of Atelier LUMA and took place as part of the Klima Biennale Wien. Students from TU Wien (Institute for Architectural Design) spent a semester experimenting with urban waste from agriculture and the food and construction sectors with the aim of jointly rethinking how we use resources. Their work is now being taken further by this year’s gastro partner of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK: In its festival café, Karma Food is serving up not only curry, sweets, and co. but also questions related to bioregional catering in the form of workshops organized together with Rote Wand – Friends and Fools and a special dinner party.
