Shelves as a social happening: The assembly of the “Sozial Regal” requires lots of people to work together simultaneously in a very small space. According to the designer Walter Grill, this collective approach can be traced back to one of the early lockdowns, when physical proximity felt like a utopia. The construction of the “Sozial Regal” requires one person per individual element. These elements are then put together to form a stable piece of furniture using lashing straps. Visitors to the Festival Headquarters in the Prater are invited to take part in such a joint assembly or dismantling exercise, to sign the “Social Shelves,” and to try out the other furniture designs by Walter Grill that are on show at the festival.
