In 1993, UNESCO initiated the program Living Human Treasures with the aim of preserving know-how and craft products and with a special focus on the associated livelihoods and living conditions. The role of ESAD.CR in Caldas Da Rainha in Portugal is similar: For the past 30 years, the school has taught designers and artists how to integrate their individual experiences into socially relevant design. The exhibition SAME HANDS combines these new and traditional positions into a multi-generational narrative that highlights the act of creating with one’s own hands in a time of changing production conditions.
