JOHANNA PICHLBAUER: MOUNTED PORCELAINS
Schloss Hollenegg for Design
16.–25.9.2022
The practice of embellishing Asian porcelain objects in Europe with gold-bronze or silver mounts in order to make them more attractive to Western collectors can be traced back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Vases became candlesticks or were given lids or decorative handles. An act of ignorance or a successful combination of East and West? As part of her examination of Heinrich von Liechtenstein’s trips around the world, Johanna Pichlbauer has taken up this tradition and brings old vases from the storage room of Schloss Hollenegg to life with new functions, materials, and accessories. The result is a collection of contemporary mounted porcelain.
