Did you know that around 10,000 deaf people live in Austria? They communicate in sign language – a wonderful, fully-fledged language with its own grammar and dialects. The Marien Apotheke Wien is the workplace of Austria’s first and only deaf chemist. As a unicorn in the specialist area of pharmacy, he has had to develop many new signs – such as those for medicinal herbs. But this has led to not only the new signs themselves but also an innovative opportunity to demonstrate them: A unique flipbook, which allows all the movements that are required to produce the six different signs to be shown at any time – without the need for either electricity or internet. An evening with inclusive design, an extraordinary language – and a surprise or two!
