Mariahilf is steep – also in the topographical sense. The buildings and places visited on this tour illustrate how the special locational qualities and unique history of the district have influenced its architecture, old and new. The tour starts with a brief introductory visit to the Festival Headquarters in the GASSE (Esterházygasse 22) and then leads visitors along well-known and hidden paths to notable buildings and the temporary interventions of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. For example, a visit to the Saint Charles Apotheke will offer an opportunity to admire both an extraordinary historical interior and an exhibition about the Culture of Tea. The penultimate stop on the tour is the LVDWIG bar in the Hotel Beethoven, which was designed by eichinger offices. The architectural walk ends with a short tour of the Festival Headquarters in the GEWÖLBE, a former garage at the foot of the Rahlstiege steps.

The tour will include buildings from Friedrich Achleitner’s architecture guide, enhanced by current examples.
