THE RECORDING OF A MAGIC MOMENT IN THE PUBLIC REALM

Vinylograph

25.–27.9.2020

From the studio (SSTR6), to the workshop (Kunst- und Räderwerk), and out into the world: Vinylograph circled around and could be seen in two locations during VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020!

Natascha Muhic and Christoph Freidörfer have been creating, arranging, and producing one-off records in Vienna with their Vinylograph since 2014. With the help of this record-cutting machine they record soundtracks, such as recordings of music or speech – together with any background noise – on 7-inch vinyl discs in real time. A special guided tour of the workshop during VIENNA DESIGN WEEK enabled visitors to admire the emergence of the latest project by the two artists – the Studio Vinylograph. One will soon be able to enter a cabin (that is currently to be found in the courtyard behind the workshop) in the public realm and produce a take-away audio artwork. In the workshop, Freidörfer offered a step-by-step explanation of the development of the mini sound studio and demonstrated the cutting machine, which has yet to be incorporated into the cabin. Although its cutting head is currently still represented by a pencil, one will soon be able to watch this equipment at work in the cabin as one makes one’s own live recording.
