Did you notice that a former caretaker’s apartment was concealed amongst the exhibition spaces of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020? This and other gems were amongst the facts revealed on the Team Tour by Alexandra Brückner. Each year, the festival tradition is to find empty space that can offer a temporary home to its headquarters – on the basis of her own experience, Alexandra explained how this space is found and what actually goes on behind the scenes during the planning and organization of the festival. Alexandra is a project manager who has the ear of the authorities and is responsible, every year, for the building, the choice of which is also determined by the Focus District of that year’s DESIGN WEEK. Her tour was full of revelations: Every sticky label, every bit of wall, and every object in the exhibition is designed and approved right down to the last detail. And even the graphic design is specially adapted every year as we breathe life into an otherwise empty building.
