Helga Schmid presented an experiment at VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020. This was symbolized by a room-height, transparent length of material, which hung from the ceiling and whose blue-pink spectrum changed throughout the course of the day as it was illuminated by daylight shining through the second-floor windows of the Festival Headquarters in Theresienbadgasse. TAKE YOUR TIME could be read on the material — take your time and redefine yourself! The designer, artist, researcher, and teacher Helga Schmid used her installation to encourage and invite the festival visitors to “unlearn” social time. The concrete idea was that, within 24 to 48 hours, they should be able to acquire a new internal clock as a means of rethinking the concept of time. This concept was particularly timely against the background of the comprehensive quarantine measures triggered by the COVID-19 crisis that have led to the consideration of sustainable structural changes in the areas of life and work right around the globe. How do we divide up our days? And is the period after the crisis going to feel completely different?
