The art and design educators Sophie Lingg and Helena Schmidt explored VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2020 together with school classes, children, and young people. This exploration took the form of tours and workshops in and around the Festival Headquarters in Meidling, during which design could be experienced at very close hand. Walks through the Amtshaus Theresienbadgasse and the Focus District Meidling addressed the subject of City and Design – both offline and online. Current issues were discussed, such as: What differentiates the 12th District in general and the area around the Festival Headquarters in particular from other neighborhoods and districts in Vienna? Which areas are covered by the term design? When do design and art, or design and research, overlap? How is the digital city shaped and for how long are our eyes focused on the displays of our smartphones as we wander through the city? During the tours of the exhibition and the neighborhood the young people were very active and recorded their impressions on their smartphones.
