AM SCHÖPFWERK HOUSING COMPLEX

ARCH ON TOUR, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK

2.10.2020, 4pm–6pm

The architectural educator Marion Kuzmani offered an invitation to take a walk through one of Vienna’s most legendary municipal housing estates. Am Schöpfwerk (Franz Schuster, 1951–1957, and a team of architects led by Viktor Hufnagl, 1976–1980), which is well known as the setting for the cult film Muttertag, is an impressive complex of buildings, whose terraces offer unknown perspectives across the city. A highlight of the visit was the guided tour of Am Schöpfwerk church, which was led by one of the Schöpfwerk’s very first residents. The main building, with its green-and-gold tiles, dark blue domes, and free-standing campanile is one of Meidling’s true architectural insider tips.
