GROWN THIS WAY – AN AESTHETIC ATTACK ON A SOCIETAL BEHAVIOR

27.9.–6.10.2019

What’s normal? That’s the question asked by the project GROWN THIS WAY – AN AESTHETIC ATTACK ON A SOCIETAL BEHAVIOR. For this purpose, it employs foodstuffs that are never sold and don't appear on our tables because they do not satisfy certain standards. Society’s view of deviations from the norm is just as rigid for the human body. In a series of photos, Amina Steiner juxtaposes foods with “uncommon” shapes with images of people with “abnormal” bodies or characteristics or in “unusual” poses. The radical contrast visualizes both our obsession with norms for foods and how they are wasted, and discriminatory physical ideals.
