I dance the world that I want! Far from heteronormative categories and ascriptions, the Fearleaders’ dance-on workshop is an expressive means to simply dance away toxic masculinity. Pirouettes, shorts, and pompoms – all that can occasionally be a mocking expression of protest and dated gender categories used to mix up their role assignments far beyond the dance floor: “Their workshop at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK invited most importantly men to free themselves from a toxic understanding of masculinity.” That was the all-male combo’s announcement in the runup to the Festival. And real men keep their word. With a swing of the hips and a wiggle of the butt, visitors, and also the festival’s director, danced up a choreographic antidote to toxic masculinity – an endeavor that was exhausting but well worth it.
