Form follows Focus District! With the goal of fundamentally improving the appearance and perception of an outdoor market, the Schwendermarkt, both during the festival and in the future, a large-scale pattern of graphic symbols was created. Lines, tiles and pathways created in the middle of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus were intended to inspire a stroll around the public space and spontaneous interaction in the neighborhood. And it was successful: Together, locals, passersby, visitors and students from Vienna and Italy explored the square and created drafts, drawings and concepts. This earned the project recognition in the form of Erste Bank’s ExtraVALUE Design Award: “Thanks to a great deal of engagement and volunteer support a project was realized in public space with exacting precision, and despite the quality of its planning and execution of the architecture and graphic art involved, it remained extremely accessible for the audience and resulted in many encounters and much participation across all language barriers,” according to the jury.
