MoreVALUE Design Award 2015: INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Ebru Kurbak (AT/TR)

30.9.–16.10.2016

What can you do well? In the run-up to the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, the designer and artists Ebru Kurbak asked people from the Caritas Lernsprung program a simple question. Those asked come from Somalia, Afghanistan,
and Turkey. Now they are in Austria. Their answers – in the form of large-format instruction manuals, interviews, and documented workshops – were on show as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2016 in the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art in Vienna.
Conceived and realized in 2015 in the Stadtarbeit format of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS endeavored to change conventional and traditional role models and open up the theme of integration by putting it to question in a mutual and precisely defined discussion: What are you good at? What skills do you have to acquire in your home country? Which of
them have you not used since you moved here? What did people from Austria have to learn in your village? What would you like to teach me? Kurbak visited Caritas training and educational courses and met people from different  countries. The exhibition in the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art showed talents and skills these men and women have brought here with them.
INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS was distinguished with the Erste Bank
ExtraVALUE Design Award 2015. The accompanying catalogue approaches the
theme from different angles and invites people to carry on the ideas.
