It opens up new possibilities, yet at the same time casts a shadow of melancholy onto the way ahead. Many young designers have had cause to leave educational institutes
at home and seek or further develop their acquired capa- bilities abroad, not only to en- hance their own skills but also to reflect on their own position and handicraft. All the intro- duced designers who have returned to Austria illustrate further developments, rejected or abandoned projects, or sim- ply relate personal anecdotes about their flight to and from their destinations abroad.
