Adrien Rovero (CH ) at the Leather Manufacturer Posenanski
2.10.2009, 6pm
Whoever knows Posenanski knows one thing: a range of products and services is offered here that is unique – from the production and repair of leather goods to their restoration – and everything in between. For some time now the owner, Thomas Posenanski, has also been in possession of a computer-driven cutting machine, of which there are exactly three in all of Austria! And this machine is exactly what the Swiss designer Adrien Rovero had in mind when he created Skinni, a durable toy made of leather scraps. Not with a figurative approach, but by simply folding and stitching together the specially cut leather, there emerge the stylised forms of elephants, crocodiles, and seals, which really are rather “skinny”, but all the more adorable because of it. Simplicity plays a decisive role here, as Rovero wants to stimulate the children’s imagination and afford them a tactile experience through the diverse surfaces of the leather. Finally, he is also interested in the idea of making something from animals back into animals, thus effecting through the leather-working process a sort of “return”, even if only symbolically. The concept of “material honesty” takes on a new dimension here.
