Panel discussion: Designing Education

Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien

9.10.2008, 6.30pm

What competencies are stimulated by experiencing design processes? Why is the promotion of creativity and unconventional thinking forward-looking for education? What can young people learn from things about themselves and our society? And what general conditions are necessary in order to realise novel communication concepts in practice?

The Department of Design, Architecture and Environment for Art Education at the University of Applied Arts Vienna under the direction of Univ.-Prof. James Skone brings together decision makers from the fields of education, politics, business and research around a table and asks: does design have a future in education?

Panellists:
Gerald Bast (Rector of the University of Applied Arts), Irmgard Bebe (design consultant, Kulturkontakt Austria), Brigitte Jank (President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce), Erwin Neubacher (art and craft educationalist, visiting lecturer at the Mozarteum Salzburg), Nigel Ordish (founding member of IDEO, Research Fellow at the RCA London), James Skone (Director of the Department of Design, Architecture and Environment for Art Education at the University of Applied Arts Vienna), Werner Timischl (Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture)
